Rear end whine in my 2005 Silverado

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 2005 Silverado I purchased new in July of 2005 with 8 miles. It is a regular cab long wheel base with 5.3, A/T, and 3.23 locking diff. The rear end whines mainly on decel between 38 and 50 mph. It also occurs at 70-80 mph.

A local Chevy dealer agreed it was too noisy and replaced the Ring and pinion, pinion bearing, seal, and oil at around 3000 miles. After they were finished it whined just as it did before. I do not recall it making this noise when the truck was first purchased. We discussed the fact that the truck has the work truck interior package (vinyl seats-rubber floor mat etc.) and may not be insulated from noise as well as a higher optioned model. They said this is probably as good as it gets. I thought about this for a few days and listened to it whine some more.

I later rode in a 2004 Silverado equipped identical but with a 3.42 locking diff. It made no noise at any speed. I then drove a 2006 Silverado identical to mine with 3.23 ratio locking diff. It made no noise. The Chevy dealer said they would check into this issue. As of last week they do not have an answer.

I really like this truck but am very disatisfied with the noisy rear end. Has anyone else experienced this problem with this model? Any info. or help is appreciated. Thank you. perkssilverado

I was going to ask this same question last week about my new 2006 2500HD with the 4:10 rear end. However, it's currently at the dealer getting an entire new rear axle assembly because the factory didn't put any diff oil in it and the dealer prep didn't inspect for it like they're suppose to.

Yours sounds like classic gear backlash noise, louder on decell is classic backlash noise. I had a shop take three tries on a Ford 8.8 rear gear change to get the backlash set correctly to eliminate the whine on decell.
