97 air pump?

Where is the air pump located on my 97 C2500 and where does it pull air from? Does it use a seppate filter rather then the air filter for the engine? At start-up lately the truck has made a high pitch whining sound until it is warmed up. My 2002 Camaro did the same thing when the filter for the air pump was very dirty and couldn't suck in enough air, so I'm assuming the same thing on the truck. I looked up the part number for the air pump and they used a new one from 97-on. Did they start using an electric one in 97? I know the older trucks had a engine driven air pump, but I don't because I looked over the engine very carefully last night. Thanks.

It doesn't have a electric air pump and may not have a belt driven. A process of elimination will tell you if you have one. Alt ,P/S, A'/C compressor a idler pulley and either a smog pump or another idler.

Idler pulley's are common for squeeling when cold. A tensioner going bad can do the same.

Thanks, I looked up and down the engine last night again and the tube I saw in the exhaust manifold was for the EGR and was not an AIR tube. So, your right I don't have AIR. I just couldn't believe the truck didn't come with it.

Is the idler pully making noise when cold something I should worry about? Or do most of them do that normally?

The bearing is probably going bad. Most auto parts stores sell them now. should be less than $20 Take off the belt and spin the idlersand other acc. See if you can isolate the noise.
