Need information on changing a fuel pump on a 97 Z71 extended cab pick up.

Have heard its easier to remove the bed to change out ... ??? how is that done and how do you change the fuel pump.

Truck turns over but won't crank. Sprayed starting fluid and it did one time but didn't stay running and wouldn't crank again...

any help GREATLY appreciated. thanks

Already answered your PM on this, so I hope that helped. I just wanted to say that in vehicle parlance, "turn over" and "crank" means the same thing. So if it turns over, it must crank!

Think of the turn of the century vehicles that one had to actually use a crank to turn over the engine so it would start.

My husband would probably have known that... sorry for the confusion...

Can you tell me exactly how to change the fuel pump out? how is it fastened in there ? They've got the bed raised... (some what) but can't figure out how it come out.

thanks for your patience.

You don't have to PM me and post here too. Just post it here... I'll see it just as quickly and others will have the opportunity to offer their advice too. Sometimes, someone has just done one of these and may remember it better than me. Been a while since I've seen a '97 in our shop for a fuel pump.

As I described, there's a locking ring holding the module in. I *THINK* back in '97, and for reasons unknown, GM filled the top of the tank area where the module goes with this wax like material. It was a real mess when you had to take a pump out.

I'm not sure what years they did the wax thing, but if your truck has that, you just have to dig it all out to get at the locking ring that holds the pump module in place.

The metal ring holding the pump module in is just tapped in a counterclockwise manner to get it to unlock. Sometimes it takes a good rap to get it started to turn.
