Without rubbing??

Okay so I have this 2006 2500 HD 4x4 with the smallest tires on the planet. Well maybe not on the planet but you get the point here.

How large of a tire can I go on the factory wheel without getting into a rubbing when turning issue.

Also has anyone installed a 20" wheel and if so what size tire did you go with. Might look into that this summer and knowing what size would be great.

Thanks for your time.

A 265/75/16 will clear without rubbing. A 285/75/16 will probably require some minor trimming... ( I think GMC's have a different front air dam than the Chevys')

However, the factory rim is narrow, and even a 265/75/16 is wider than what is recommended for it. (although this is the size I'm running)

Some tire dealers may be reluctent to mount a larger tire on the stock alloy. I had my Revo's mounted at Walmart, but I had to take the rims in "off the truck" because the door jam does not show a larger tire option for my truck...

I have a 2005 HD and I was told that aftermarket 16x8 wheels would not fit and that I would have to go to 17 inch wheels, has anyone installed 16x8 aftermarket wheels on there 2005 HD? AKGMC where are you at I live in eagle river.

I've got 20" x 9.5" Weld Velociti 8's with 305-50's on my 2500LD. The HD sits a little higher so there shouldn't be any rubbing issues.

Good Luck! :fume:

Hey there SS, I dont suppose you have any photos of your truck with those wheels and tires on it do you? That is the same size tire I was looking at and kind of leaning towards those wheels as well. Either those or Foose Spank 8's.

I have an 02 2500HD My wheels are 16X8 Ibelive with 315's on them. The T-bars are cranked all the way.

Here is what it looks like:

As you can see the bumper is trimmed and there is still rubbing. The innter fender wells are torn up at the edges.

I need to get a 6.5 lift if I want to keep running these tires. The truck was set up like this when I bought it but I do like it.

I don't have a place to host my pix so I can't post them here. If you PM me and give me your e-mail address, I'll send them to you.

I had 305-70-16 on my 2001 2500 HD with the victoria performance lift keys and the tires still rubbed even with trimming the air dam and inner fenderwells. I hated the rubbing so I sold the tires and bought bfgoodrich rugged trail tires in 265-75-16. No more rubbing, great traction on snow and ice as well as towing my toy-hauler travel trailer. Just my 2 cents.

CWH did you install the keys yourself or did you have someone in town do it for you? I have been looking at getting it done, I saw that Johnsons tire does it for about 500 but not sure what all they install.

Piece of cake,

Tools required are a heavy duty two jaw gear puller an air impact wrench and an air chisel. I'd be happy to lend assistance. I hate Johnsons tire center. It is helpful to have a couple of extra hands under the truck. Just a side note. It does firm up the ride a bit. Very noticable with the stock 245 tires, but with larger tires it isn't that bad in my opinion.

 Does anybody know why exactly they put 245's on from the factory? Is there a distinct advantage with that size tire? (load range or handling?) Or is it just a matter of trying to keep cost down. Also why is the sticker on the door not labeled for any size bigger??

Thanks a bunch!

I'm sure there is a cost issue along with other things. Most importantly, there isn't a single tire manufacturer that will recommend putting a larger tire on the standard 6.5" wheel.

Actually, a 265/75/16 load range "D" will have a very similar load capacity when compared to a 245/75/16 "E".
