Dually an overkill in the mean time ???

Hi all,

I'm debating bweem acquiring a 3500 Dually, Duramx, allison auto, 4*4 (or 2*4 not sure yet). The problem is that I won't really need the towing power for a year or two but I do need a truck now.

So I'm concerned about buying a smaller truck and selling it in two years. Depreciation at that point would kill me.

I might consider buying a dually now despite that it would be an overkill in the mean time.

So....what are the disadvantage of driving a dually as a daily winter driver beside not being able to go tru a car wash and requiring a tad more space to park ?

My wife already has an SUV for familly outing, so I would need to drive my truck only daily to a train station this winter...parking there would not be an issue. In the summer I would get my car out and the truck would be stricly for the farm.

Sorry for being long-winded. Thanks in advance for the help.

I just went from a Reg Cab Silverado 1500 to a Crew Cab 2500HD 8.1L. I have to park in tight spaces and navigate tight city streets all of the time. So far it hasnt been a problem and I dont regret getting a bigger truck.

Other than its big arse, the dually rides and drives pretty good for such a large truck. The 4WD version may serve you better for winter driving.

Two options i can think of in one minute:

If you need a new truck now; buy the dually (The new LBZ Duramax is a beast). If you need a truck now (not a dually), but will sell it in a year - buy a preowned truck that's already been hit with the biggest part of its depreciation. Something like an 03 or 04.

If it were me and i needed a new truck NOW, and i knew it would be put to use in the future - i would just get it over with and buy it. No need to take a hit in reselling something i'm going to flip in a year just to have something to drive.

I would say, buy an older Toyota 4wd pickup for a daily driver, and when the time came...Get your farm rig and keep them both. Make a weekend toy out of the Yota. :flag:

A dually can be a little loose in the back end on icy roads. Too much tire on the ground. Easy solution is just put some weight in the bed. If you live where it snows then 4X4 definitly.

If you are getting a regular cab then driving in town isn't that bad, just remember you got a wide butt when it comes to corners.

I don't even bother trying to find a close parking spot with my truck at Wal-Mart etc. It's the "back 40" for me, but then I've got a crew cab and 8 foot bed. Not exactly ment for maneuvering in tight spots.

My thoughts exactly. I have a cc/lb/drw and I drive it daily. It takes some time gettin' use to drivin' in southern California although, a wise investment if you plan to use it.

I wouldn't bother with buyin' a truck just to sell it in a couple of years.

I wouldn't buy anything but a dually.  I have two.  You get use to the size pretty quick.

So besides size you would not see anything overly negative about using it as a daily driver (amoung other useage) ??

If you can afford to drive it daily then by all means go out and buy one.

For what it's worth, you may need to replace six tires instead of four. That adds up fast.

Echoing the statements of the other posters, they aren't that hard to use as daily drivers, as long as you are aware of everything around you.

But you probably already know this, so disregard this if necessary.
