[1992 K2500] Steering wheel R&R

Gotta replace the ignition lock cylinder in my 92 K2500 . Got the parts and a diagram from the dealer. Looks like a simple job. But I know sometimes there are "surprise" parts in there that pop out and getcha...

There is no airbag to worry about. It looks like a normal wheel puller is the right tool, and then just a single small bolt is holding the lock cylinder in place.

I've done this job on other vehicles, and the last time I did it on a GM I remember thinking that I really needed 3 hands to hold springs out of the way while I replaced the cylinder. But that was an '81, and I don't know how this one varies. I would guess there are more anti-theft features to complicate things.

Advice? :banghead:

If I remeber correctly GM didn't change the column style till '95, so your '92 is similar to the '81. There is a large spring under the steering wheel lock plate that you will need to compress to remove the lock ring that holds it in place. This is where you will need three hands if you don't use the special tool. You should be able to rent/borrow one from your local parts store (Advance, AutoZone, etc.) or you can buy one from the same stores for around $15 or so.

Yep, the lock plate spring is a real bear to compress enough to remove the retaining ring. You would be well advised to beg, borrow, steal, buy or rent the tool you need to compress it.

I've stuck more than one screwdriver through my fingers trying to do it without the tool.

Citydriver & GM-Tech:  You guys Rock! That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking to find out, and I obviously came to the right place. Thank you very much, and Happy Truckin'! :D
