Kodiak 4500

I am might be buying a Kodiak 4500 4x4 with a 8.1 through a private sale. The owner says the truck gets 9 to 12 mpg. Are there any kodiak owners who can verify this and would it be worth it to get a power programmer to increase milage for this perticular truck.

I have a 4500 with the 8.1 L and the 5.13 rear end. I'm getting an overall average of 7 mpg. Towing it drops to 5 to 6 mpg. When not towing I can get up to 9 mpg max. Usually it's around 8.
