Hello Tranny guys. Got some questions.

Ok, Im having trouble with my 4l60e tranny. It wont hold 4th. It starts to go in then drops it into third gear. I did install a transgo shift kit in it.

1. what does the 1-2 3-4 accumulators do??

2. what does the servo do?? mounted on the side of the tranny behind round cover.

My guess is that the problem lies with one of these items. Just not sure what one and why??.

Thanks if you can help.

The accumulators cushion the hydraulic application of the band or clutch.

A servo is the hydraulic piston that applies the band. The servo under the cover is the 2nd and 4th servo and applies the 2-4 band. It uses a different piston inside of the servo to apply 4th than the one it uses for 2nd.

Are you thinking that your problem is with the servo? The outermost piston is the one used for 4th.

Good Luck,

I had a similar problem w/my 4L60e after I installed my TransGo kit, INSTALLER ERROR :fume:

Turned out that while I was re-installing the servo (1-2, 3-4) the one on the side. The spring fell off of the pin, and was laying in the bottom of the chamber. Funny thing is, it was shifting OK for about a week before it started acting up. It was slipping real bad in 1st, then seemed to sliiiide into 3rd. When I pulled the pan to look for damage or any of my screw-ups, the oil pan was loaded with glitter. SCARED THE CRAP OUTA ME :flag: .... Anyhow, I took the valve body and servos out again to re-trace my steps, that's when I discovered what had happened. The servo bore was nicked up quite a bit, but luckily it did not reach the sealing surface of the bore. I was able to reinstall a new set of servo pistons and o-rings with a new spring of course, flushed the pan and replace the filter, I should note that I had also installed a remote spin-on filter in the cooler lines which caught most of the aluminum shavings before re-entering the front pump, so I changed that filter also.....bright side of the story, 18000 miles later, still shifting like a champ. My truck now has over 179,000mi on it.

Im hoping thats not the problem. Im guessing its the servo but im not a tranny guy. I should have replaced the accumulators while i was at it but the ones in there looked good. I still have them so replacing them is possible. Just messy and time consuming
