Transmission Slipping

Looking for some opinions. FYI...I'm not very mechanical. I have a 2000 Silverado 4X4 (auto) with approximately 75,000 . Transmission began slipping the other day. It is usually between 2nd and 3rd gear. Tried to use reverse last night and nothing. Tried drive and nothing. Waited about 1/2 hour and tried again, with intent of taking to dealer. Got about 1/2 mile up the road and quit, still running. Again no R or D. No unusally sounds. So I pushed it home. This morning R and D engaged. Had it towed to dealer. One more thing. Dealer did some repairs about 5,000 miles ago. I had some fluid leakage from the front end. Here is what my invoice says "69999 TRANS. OIL PLAN GASKET AND FRONT DIFF PINION SEAL LEAKING. REPLACED THE BASKET AND TRASN FILER. REPLACED TEH FRT. PINION SEAL". Might this having anything to do with current issue ???? Waiting on dealer to call !!! Any opinions would be greatly appreciated !!!!

Margasr,

It sounds to me like it has insufficient pump pressure at times. I would first check the fluid level. Then put a pressure gauge on it. It sounds like you may not be able to do that but the shop should tell you what they find.

Assuming it is low pressure, a number of things can cause it:

1. Low fluid

2. Loose or leaking suction filter (the one in the pan)

3. Pump failure

4. Pressure regulator problem

5. Blown pump gasket

6. Valve body gasket or leak

If you post back what they tell you, I can let you know if it sounds legitimate to me based on the symptoms.

Good Luck,

Doug

Here's what the service guy said. "We will not know for sure what the problem is until we disassemble the transmission. The computer is fine. Something is definitely wrong in the transmission. It will cost about $600 to disassemble the transmission and then they will know exactly what the issue is." He said an new transmission would cost about $4000 in total. Comments ???? :D He said they should know something by mid-day on monday.

They should pressure test it before they do anything. If it's low, drop the pan and check the suction filter, valve body and check for signs of a catastrophic failure. If they don't find it there.... yank it out an have a look at the pump.

His response seems a bit lame and generic to me. As a customer that coud be potentialy dropping $4000 in his shop, I think you deserve a better reply than that. They should be able to prvoide you with better details than what you are getting.

Thanks for the link, that's a pretty cool site. Those guys seem to have their heads screwed on straight.

Do a search on them before you buy a trans. I've heard nightmare stories about their Raptors. Probably good to buy parts from but I wouldn't buy a trans from them.

Also, $4000 is a rip-off IMO unless most every part is bad. I had a Level 4 rebuild from Chuck (FLT) him and it was around $2000. I'd get a second opinion if I were you.

Well here is the latest. Service guy from dealer called. He said there were all kinds of shaving found when the disasembled the transmission. Rebuild will cost $2300. New trany will cost $3400. In both costs was $600 for taking the trany apart. I went with the new trany. The truck only has 75,000 miles and is in great shape and i'd like to keep it forever. Primary driver for maybe 5 more years then just to have when i need a truck. I'm sure i got ripped off, but not sure what else to do. Not sure i trust a transmission place anymore. Please critic !!!

Can they guarentee that the new tranny will last longer then the one the truck came with? or is it going to be as unreliable.
