Transmission Problem

I have a 97 yukon which i am having some problems with.

I can drive around town all day and the transmission will shift great. Once i get on the highyway it still works great, but once i come to a stop after traveling at 65-70 and take off again it has neck snapping shifts. The only thing i can think is that the transmission is slipping at high speeds and the computer is trying to compensate for the slippage.

Neck snapping shifts are the result of the computer increasing line pressure to compensate for some problem. When the trans is in limp mode, it also increases line pressure but prevents shifting into the highest gears in order to limp you home. I suspect you have a code stored in the computer and I would start by getting the code read via Autozone (free) or dealer.

ya it is thrown a p1870 code transmission problem. which i beleive is a dealer code i guess i could go to the dealership but i try and stay away from them

That code means internal tranny slippage. Not good but you may have a cheaper option. I believe it can be caused by valvebody wear. I don't know if the Transgo HD shift kit includes the parts or if the Sonnax TCC kit would work but I believe there is a kit available to repair the valvebody if not too bad. Depending on mileage it may work or you may be looking at a rebuild. Also if you haven't changed the fluid, you could try that but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

9 Times out of ten a p1870 code means start saving your pennys for either a new or rebuilt tranny.

Mine is doing the same thing and has the same code. Did you get yours fixed?

I had the same problem with my 2000 Silverado. I took it to the dealer, but it would never happen -ALL- of the time, just sometimes. They told me the transmission was slipping and it was like 600 bucks just for them to open it up and look at it. I decided to hold off, turns out it has happened since then. SO maybe they frigged with the computer and were just trying to pork me.

 

Mine also sort of revs up and down when going up a slight incline at about 45 mph. I dont know if the computer is trying to decide what gear to be in.

 

Can anyone explain how this computer works?

I've decided i'm going to try a transgo shift kit. Which kit is better the stage 1 or the stage 2. Also, does the stage 2 kit do everything the stage 1 kit does, plus just add the ability to upshift and downshift.

I found a post with all codes. P1870=Transmission Mechanical Transfer Case 4x4 Switch Circuit Failure. Is this necessarily slippage?

A shift kit can and most likely will make it worse. . .

Yea, I was kinda thinking the same thing myself. Arn't you supposed to have shift kits installed during/after a rebuild? How much does it cost to rebuild a 4L60-E? Is it better just to buy a new one?

Well the kit i have says that it will correct the shifting problem from 1-2. I am just trying to make my transmission last until i get out of college this summer.
