8.1 Belt noise/ squeal

Ok guys, after replacing the idler on the top belt, it still squeals when cold. Sometimes it does it even after it warms up. Tried a new belt, cleaned all the pulley surfaces with the belt off. Still squeals. What's the deal? I bought the truck with 22k on it, and I now have 60k. Thanks!

Have you looked at the A/C compressor belt? Use a water sprayer to determine which belt is squeaking, A/C or accessory. When you make one go quite with water on it that's the belt. Try replacing the tensioner assembly.

My 05, 8.1 chirps every single morning for several minutes. The colder the more it chirps. I was told that one of the pulleys is out of alignment at that is what's causing the chirp. IIRC it is the power steering pulley. Apparently the low bid GM supplier didn't install some of the pulleys on the shafts square so it wobbles. I guess you and I are two of the lucky ones.

I also noticed that my serp. belt is fairly gouged on the flat side (with only 5,30o miles on it). Interesting.

Accessory Drive Belt Whine (Reposition Power Steering Pump Pulley) #03-06-01-011 - (Mar 21, 2003)

Accessory Drive Belt Whine (Reposition Power Steering Pump Pulley)

2001-2003 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban

2002-2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

2001-2003 GMC Sierra, Yukon XL

with 8.1L Engine (VIN G -- RPO L18)

Condition

Some customer may comment on a whining-type noise that is audible in the vehicle's passenger compartment. This noise can typically be heard when the vehicle is idling and may vary in pitch as engine RPM is increased.

Cause

The power steering pump pulley may be positioned too far inboard on the power steering pump.

Correction

Follow all of the current diagnostics in the Service Manual.

If the concern is not resolved, then reposition the power steering pump pulley on the power steering pump shaft. Following the applicable Service Manual procedure and using J 25034-C, reposition the pulley outward from the end of the shaft by 1.0 mm (0.040 in.). This will leave the shaft recessed in the pulley.

I have this problem too. I changed the belt out this week and it was quiet for 2 days but now it's back, so it's off to the dealer for some warranty work

my 8.1 gives a sort of chirping noise but it doesn't do it at idle unless really cold only at higher rpms. Almost seems to be coming from under the truck. speed increases and decreases with rpm. Not sure if there is some sort of pump in the trans that could do that.

Probably not a belt noise though.
