1500 Packing Plates

I need to replace the rusted out backing plates on my 1500. The problem is that I need to/want to replace the rubber boots on the actuating arms on the backing plates. The rubber boots are not replacable alone. They are part of a kit that is $74 per side. Are the boots really necessary??? For $148 can I go without them.

 

Having these backing plates changed out by someone else is costing me alot already!
