abs question

hey all.

I have a 2000 silverado 1500. about 3 days ago i noticed the abs light in the dash

came on. I do not have any additional (idiot) lights on, or noises like the abs motor/pump running. I have intentionally tried to skid and the abs are not kicking in. I have never had any type of problem with the brakes till now. any ideas what might cause this & is there any way of trouble shooting this without a dealer getting involved. I am not located close to any dealers and traveling for service can be a bit of a hassel.

Could be your wheel speed sensor(s). There was a recall on them recently to check for excessive corrosion and failures. I'm sure one of the real guys here will chime in soon enough. did you look in the TSB forum? Could be other things, but this is what comes to mind first.

I was not sure if the wheel speed sensors would activate the light only, with no other obvious problems.

2 different friends had wheel sensor problems and what would happen with the truck is a problem with the abs at very low speeds. it would activate under like 5-10 mph. mine doesn't have that problem.

any sensor in the abs system can set the light off.. if you got a autozone close go there have them hook up the obd II scanner to it and read the codes, write down the code and then post them here, then i can tell you what is going on

note friday, sunday, and monday I wont be on here so it may be delay on responce

You might want to check this. It is from a GM bulletin. I think I have the same problem.

Perform the following steps to improve the connection of the EBCM Ground:

Remove the EBCM Ground. The EBCM Ground is located on the frame beneath the driver's side door. If multiple grounds are found in this location, the EBCM ground can be identified as the heavy (12-gauge) wire.

Clean the area, front and back, using a Whiz Wheel®.

Install the bolt, ground and a star washer to the frame.

Install a star washer and nut to the backside of the frame. Tighten

Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (79 lb in).

Cover the front and back side of the repair area using Rubberized Undercoating.

If the abs light is on then the system is shut off and won't perform the anti-lock function at all. It's not really that dangerous since 99.999999% of the time the abs system just sits there and does nothing anyway. Just remember to revert back to pre-abs style braking in emergencies.

My sister has a 2001 S-10 Blazer and the abs and brake lights both stay on all the time. Chevy said that the ebcm is shot. A new one is about $800.00 just for the part. So, she's just using the brakes the old fashioned way as if it doesn't have abs.

I already contacted autozone and unfortunately they claim they cant read a brake problem. only engine related problems.

I thought that when you hooked up the scanner it read all problems/codes stored in the computer.

Is this guy wrong? I mean it is autozone, it is possible he has no idea of what he is talking about and is only there for a pay check.

I think i will try them again and see if they will scan it just to see what if any codes come up.

Does anyone know if i fix the problem will the light go out on it's own. or does it have to be shut off (by a dealer or computer)

sorry if this seems like a dumb question but i have never had an idiot light on in this truck before.

IT WILL HAVE TO BE SHUT OFF WITHA SCANNER

My warning lights went off by themselves. It took about 30 seconds for the computer to do a self check and the all was wonderful in toyland.

I have a simple question.

When these ABS problems occur , is it always common for both brake warning lights to light up or just the ABS light?

Like I have read in many other posts here, I have a very intermittant problem with my ABS and Brake warning lights, this has been going on for about a year now, and it corrects itself every time I shut off and restart the engine. Sometimes I won't see and warning lights for a week or 2 , other times it seems like multipe times a day. I'm not a big fan of taking an intermittant problem to the dealers , because unless it happens in front of them , they are just going to change parts and charge me through the nose.

if it's common for both lights to come on at the same time , what would you recommend I check, the ground sounds like a cheap place to start first.

any advice would be much appreciated.

Well , I fianlly got time to get underneath and check the potential grounding issue, removed cleaned, and reinstalled ground wire as described in above post... no luck, still intermentent lights? I tried wiggling all of the conectors and when bumping the abs unit it came on again? reset ( by simply shutting of and restarting engine ) wiggled and banged around and did not come on again. Tied a 3rd time and light came back on??.

Has anyone noticed if their abs lights come on when they hit hard road bumps? I don't know if I am dreaming, but that's when the light occassionally comes on? sometimes no bump is required, but there seems to be a repeat on the hard chassis banging pot holes?

There are a couple of connectors on the abs unit, the one with only 2 wires is the one that when I wiggled it it turned the lights on. , but when I checked for a 4th ime, it would not let the lights come on no matter how many times I wiggled it?

Any suggestions here? the lights drive me nuts
