Hard Start Condition

Hi all. I have a problem that is driving me :banghead: and hope someone can help me.

I have a 1999 GMC Suburban K2500 3/4 ton with the 7.4L engine with about 105,000 miles on it. Near the end of last summer, I noticed that it was getting hard to start in the mornings. Once started, there is no evidence of hesitation, stumbling, lack of power or rough idle. Everything is great once I get it started.

First thing I tried was to change the plugs (needed it). It helped some, but not alot. Next I changed the plug wires (Delco) and no help. I got tired of this and went all out... distributor, ignition module, coil... and still no help. I thought maybe it was a fuel problem and changed the fuel filter. Nothing. I checked the pressure at the fuel rail and it's about 59PSI, which is right in the middle of the nominal range.

One last thing, I keep getting DTC P1351 that shows up. This reads as high voltage in the ignition system. However, since the system is practically new with all the new parts, I'm not sure where to go with this.

Anyone out there have the same problem? How did you fix this? It's getting worse... I have to crank for at least half a minute to get it to catch, then probably another 15 seconds to get it started after it catches. Still runs great once it's running, just gonna eat up my starter.

Thanks.

I have an 2000 Silverado Z71 with the 5.3L and just turned 54,000 miles........I came to this board hoping to possibly find some insight to the exact same problem EXCEPT my truck does it only on a warm start(cold start is always fine) with some slight hesitation if idle for some time, no loss of power......original plugs/wires/fuel filter still in my truck.......thank you for any input you may have.

First thing to do is pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is any gas dripping out, if so that's your problem. As for the p1351, that is almost alway an ignition control module. I know you have replaced it but if you used aftermarket junk??? I have seen it happen. Other than that you should check the terminals in the connector to make sure that none are spread apart and not making good contact.
