99 k1500 Sub: Brake Humming Noise

Recommended Posts

When I press on the brakes i get this humming noise. Its only when i press the brake pedal. I took the pads and discs off and removed any rust buildup on the rotors, as well as sanded the brake pad surface and disk surface. Theres lots of pad left, yet i still have this noise. NO pedal pulsation or steering wheel pulsation, just a humming noise when the brakes are applied.

IDEAS??..Rears perhaps? The brakes are 6 months new....

Don't know if I would take sandpaper to disks and rotors. But anyways, it could be a tire to road noise issue when your braking. That would be my first guess. If your engine/exhaust is quiet, you can test out my idea my slowing down by shifting......drive to 2nd, 2nd to 1st. If it does it then as well then most likely tire noise.

ian, have you check the thread on the tires?

I don't know if a thread on a tire would make the noise. I would more at the tread..... :shakehead: Also make sure the tires are not directional, and if they are, make sure the arrow points in the direction the tires turn going forward. It is also possible you have a little differential noise.

Thanks for all the responces sofar.

It is definatly not my ABS modulator making the hum. I checked the tires and they look ok (70% tread life) . I am running Firestone Destination LE which are not directional. This is very unusual and never had this problem before.

More suggestions are welcome..thanks

when did the noise start???? When did you get the tires????? Can you tell if its coming from the front/back???? Does it make the noise when you shift to a lower gear, which makes the engine do the braking???

The noise started last week. The tires were put on last summer. I cannot tell if its from the front of back, but seems more from the front. It does not matter what gear I am in, it only occurs when i press the brake and slow down. From any speed all the way to a stop.

thanks

What about a worn out idler and pitman arm? When you brake and put the load onto the front suspension, if these arms are worn, will it throw out the alignment enough to make the tires hum during braking?
