Blazer fuel mileage

I have a 98 Blazer I bought last year. It's a base model 2 door 4x4 ,5 speed manual,no options other than a limited slip rear axle,3.42 gears and what comes as standard equipment,ie,AC,shows about 120,000 miles.

The fuel mileage is somewhat disappointing, about 17-18 mpg when driven carefully in suburban -rural driving, maybe 20 mpg on the road trip at 65 mph.The Blazer runs excellent, smooth steady idle, good power when accelerating,no part throttle hesitation or surging..No signs of a rich fuel mixture,no black smoke, you can wipe a finger in the exhaust pipe,no soot at all. There are no fault codes stored,I recently replaced all the O2 sensors and spark plugs, wires,no change in fuel mileage or the way the engine performs.

My other daily driver is a 96 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 5 spd manual. The Jeep consistantly gets 22 mpg in the same type driving, same driver.I know the Cherokee is about 700 lbs lighter in weight, has 3.08 gears, but has about the same HP rating. The Jeep has what looks like worse aerodynamics,so I expected the Blazer to get about the same fuel mileage.

Is the MPG I get typical? Or could there be a problem with the injection or engine management system?

Another 5 speed !!! Doesn't seem to be that many of us out there !!

Mine is a '00, and gets (actually 'got') about 18mpg when I first got it less than a year ago . But lately seems to be getting only about 16mpg or slightly less.

At first I thought it might have been the winter gas that dropped it, but I'm still getting less than 18 ?

I did get a "multiple or random misfiring sparkplug" code awhile back, so maybe it's time for me to change the plugs and see if that helps to bring it back up a bit.

So, by going with the numbers I've been getting, it seems normal.

No, not too many stick Blazers that's for sure.

Well, if the fuel mileage is typical, everything must be ok ,so I'll just live with. It's my wife's vehicle, she pays for the gas,not me :bs:

I know that with the setup you have seeing the mileage you are now is pretty decent. I had a 95 2wd with the throttle body 4.3 5 spd. I was able to get near 30 mpg highway with 3.08's out back and I was really happy with it but it just seems the later years are unable to get any decent mileage. You also have the extra rolling resistance and weight of the 4wd system I think you are doing pretty good how you are now

I recently traded in my '98 auto, which never dipped below 20-21 MPG. It had 100K and ran well. I was under the impression that driving a stick should be more favorable in the MPG department.
