AC not working

hey all, i did my searching before posting.. i dont know what the deal is with my ac.

problem as follows...

i had a burnt out AC switch, so, i bought a brand new one to fix this problem. i assumed it was just old and time for it to burn up.

anyhow, long story short. i checked all the fuses and relay... i did all the trouble shooting i could as far as connecting battery to compressor, clutch engaged.

when i hooked up my BRAND NEW switch, turned it on, i smelled electronics.. yea, i was getting upset considering i paid $100 for this switch.

i have gone through the haynes book electrical diagram... it has helped some but, i have no idea what would cause it to burn up a switch. any ideas?

my GUESSES are narrowed down as follows..

Here’s what I have narrowed it down to...

-ac low pressure cutout switch

-ac high pressure cutout switch

-ac compressor cycling switch

i have no clue where these things are or i would have already checked them.. if i knew how to?

1997 GMC Suburban

5.7 4x4

dual AC

Thank you all in advance.

None of the items you listed could cause excess current/switch burnout. Probably a wiring short to ground.

Do not just throw money at this problem. I always run out of money before problem.

I agree. I had a/c trouble last summer, no fun.

My truck never catches the money I throw at it...

When you say the A/C switch burned up, are you referring to the fan/temp/position controls?

I have a fan switch that burned out and I replaced the whole assembly for $100. Two years later the wire harness to the blower motor behind the glovebox melted and shorted out the system. I cut that out and connected the wires using insulated disconnects. All is well until one year later (4 months ago) the fan switch started losing speeds one at a time until they were all gone. I found out you can disassemble the control box and replace the fan switch for $15. All is well again.
