ticking sound,and sluggish 5.7

I just bought a 93 z71,w/5.7 auto and stuff. The struck had been sitting up for almost a year.I have put new exhaust, plugs, oil, filter, fuel filter and water pump.the problem I am having is what sounds like a lifter ticking but gets louder when I drive a distance or put it under a serious load.I have pulled a trailer w a small Bobcat on it and by the time I have driven 10 miles it is loud enogh for me to hear over the ac and radio. The problem I noticed tonight was when it downshifted to climb a hill it seemed to backfire,I did put the throttle to it pretty good.Do you think I might have hit the rev limiter?Any help on the other stuff would be greatly appreciated.

exhaust leak can make a ticking sound

have you checked or tightened the valve lash already?

not trying to scare you but I have a 93 GMC with 4.3. it had a ticking sound. it had a cracked piston. it exhibited the exact symptoms you described.

I figured out where it was coming from by shorting out different plug wires, since it was in the reciprocating assembly the sound went away when cylinder was unloaded.

I did the stick a tube to the valve cover test and believe it or not could not hear the sound from inside. So I am leaning toward the exhaust a little now. Thanks for the input .And yes that piston breaking thing scared me.

If it is a lifter, change the oil, leave out one qt and replace it with a qt of Rislone. If it is a sticking lifter, this will fix it. If the lifter is completely worn out, it will not help.

Rislone is a wonderful product for cleaning the hyd system of an engine. IMO it is not necessary in an engine that has been well maintained. But for an engine that you are not sure of and has been setting up, it may correct your problems.
