Special tool needed for fan removal?

Recommended Posts

Howdy people,

I've read that there is a special tool needed to remove the fan from the water pump shaft. Can someone confirm or deny this?

If it is needed, what does it look like and what does it do?

Is there a workaround by using a home-made tool or by using another process for removal?

Is this tool available for rent from local autoparts stores?

Thanks!

Eddie

I have put two water pumps on and I didnt need a special tool. I just had the right size wrench to go around the fan shaft and hit it with a hammer to get it free. There may be a special too but i didnt have one. Good Luck

I got mine loose with a big pair of channel locks. I left the belt on to keep tension and grabbed the belt with one hand to put extra tension on the belt and gave a couple of good yanks on the channel locks and it came loose easily.

The tool is called an open wrench. Thats how they are installed at the assembly plant. Removal just requires a sharp rap of a mallet on the end of the wrench to the left.
