01 1500 4.3 no start

Hi all, This is my Bro-in-laws truck. Has a 4.3 V6 that started running rough on him a few weeks ago. He replaced plugs and wires based on an Autozone diagnostic that said he had a trouble code showing a bad plug. He changed them one at a time, and I checked them and they are right. Truck turns over fine, and has good spark, but no start. Raw gas smell at the tail pipe, and the plugs were wet with fuel. I was thinking its the Fuel pump (fuses and relays are good) but reading here gets me to think its the fuel pump regulator instead. I know where the V8 one is, and what it looks like, but he cant find it on his V6. The Autozone website shows the part looks the same for both engines.

Does it seem my diagnosis is right? I dont have a Fuel pump pressure guage.

Also where is the FPR on the V6? Anyone have an engine diagram?

Thanks all

Greg

Did you change the cap and rotor with that P0300 code?? You don't have bad plugs or wires, you have a corroded cap and rotor.

Check your fuel pressure. If it's even on the low side of the specs, your pump is getting weak and you'll get no-starts and random misfires. Something about that damned CMPFI s**t. Be ready for a $200 fuel pump though.

He didnt change the cap and rotor...

Would a weak FP cause the plugs to foul out wet? I mean, wet with gas to where you can see it and wipe it off.

I saw the FPs from that GLOBAL-AUTO guy on ebay. Will probably do that.

Thanks

The dist. cap is the common cause for rough idle, no start on the 01 4.3 due to condensation from ac lines dripping on the distributor. There was a recall on it.

Greg... did you get this fixed?

We did the old "hit the fuel tank" trick on it, and it started. BIL forgot to tell me the fuel guage had been acting up too, so I am pretty sure its the fuel pump. Ordered one from the GLOBAL-AUTOMOTIVE guy for $130 shipped, and will be changing it ASAP. They are driving it right now :flag: so with my luck it will die in the middle of nowhere and I wont have all my tools with me :D

ANyone have a link to the "take the bed off the truck to change the FP" thread? I have bad luck with this search engine....

Thanks

Greg
