engine noise with Mobil 1 ???

Be reading all the posts on Mobil 1 oil. It seems like most that have engine clicks and clacks have changed over to Synth oil. My 5.3 is quite on dino oil. Will it click and clack on Mobil 1??

No, but if you have an agenda one can imagine what they want the results to be. My .002

If it is quiet on dino, it should be quiet on syn. However, I do have a friend with a 02 4.8L and it does have some additonal upper end noise with Mobile 1. Don't know why and I cannot explain it. He tried it back and forth between dino and syn 3 or 4 times, and it was louder with the Mobile 1.

If it is quiet on dino, why would you screw with it? Do you want a possible problem? I run dino and have no problems or noises, I would not switch to synthetic. If it aint broke dont fix it. :shakehead:

My 2005 5.3L is quiet on Mobil 1 with 25000 miles. The 2002 6.0L has the CSK noise, that I first noticed around 60,000. This engine has around 78000 now and was switched to Mobil 1 when I purchased at 50,000 miles. My previous truck '99 5.3L Sierra also seemed to develop the CSK around 60,000 on Dino. oil. This is my .02.

If your engine has clicks or clacks with one oil why wouldn't you have them with another oil?? If the oil you are using is working for you, why change?

I dont say either synthetic or dino oil will cause noise, I also don't believe either will totally solve CSK or piston slap if that is what you have. I just dont see why someone who has no noise on dino would want to switch to synthetic. :shakehead:

Oil does not cause noise. Inferior machining and assembly techniques do. If you want to run synth, rock on. If you don't like it after you try, switch back. I personally run the highest quality stuff I can find which is synth; this really is a matter of personal preference. There are lots of good engines in the jukyards that ran on dino oil.

I think that sums it up nicely.

Oil can cause noise. You could have a perfectly machined block with perfectly matched pistons and valves. Put in the wrong oil and you can develope noise. Sure, the oil is not making the noise, just caused the wear that creates the noise.

Ok, let me add, as long as you're using the correct weight for the engine in discussion. As long as that is being done it shouldn't matter what brand or type (dino or syn) you use. If your engine clacks with one 5w-30 then it should also clack with another 5w-30.

Exactly.

if you went and asked Madame Cleo to look at her Tarot Cards for an answer to your oil question, it would be just as good as the one you will find in this thread.

if it's not makeing noise now it shouldn't with mobil 1 of the correct viscosity. if in the future it does develop noise it would be hard to prove it wouldn't have developed the noise if you still ran dino.

people who run dino also have the clicks and clacks. there is several TSB on clicks and clacks that GM claim is normal. none of them have anything to do with the oil except viscosity stuff running to thin/thick.

the reason you see more people with syn here getting the clicks and clacks is it's a enthuisast site and we use the best. meaning most are running mobil 1 or amsoil or german castrol(sp) with the odd redline and Royal purple.

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
