turning of automatic headlights

i have a 2003 GMC sierra, and i'm wondering if there is a way to make the headlight switch turn off the automatic lights. it has the position that is supposed to turn them off but it doesn't do anything when when you turn it to it. i think i need a vic code or somethig to get it to work

 

any help would be apreciated, thanks

I'm not sure if it's the same for the Sierra, but on my Jimmy, you have to push the domelight over-ride button 4 times, then the lights will go out.

This still needs to be done again anytime you restart the truck. It only lasts as long as the key is in the run position.

I did some more checking around and gm mechanic told me it is something that works on trucks sold in the United States, but hasn't been enabled on ones sold in Canada.

 

I just want to be able to turn off the auto headlights when the truck is idleing, or when i'm getting home late at night

I've been wanting to this myself, just haven't had the time yet. What Hyper said about the over-ride button should do it also, on a temp basis.... it's in the owners manual.

 

I found these instructions from another thread:

 

"To disable the auto headlights you need a 1.5K ohm resistor (Radio Shack) and 2 Scotchlok Tap Connectors (Walmart).

 

First locate the Body Control Module (BCM) which is under the dash, below the steering column. Laying on the floor, this should be visible without removing any dash panels. You should find a purple connector (C3). Unplug it.

 

Locate the white and gray wires (A4 and A6). I don't remember if white is A4 and gray is A6 or vice versa. It doesn't matter anyway. BTW - there are two gray wires in the connector. The one you want is the one farthest away from the white wire.

 

Tap the gray wire from the plug (C3) to one end of the resistor and the white wire to the other end. You don't need to cut the wires. Make sure you tape up all wires to prevent a short. You should now have a gray wire coming from C3 tapped to one lead of the resistor and the white wire from C3 tapped to the other resistor lead *. Plug C3 back into the BCM. Start the truck and make sure the lights are off. Throw a dark towel or something over the light sensor on the dash and verify the lights stay off. Try your light switch that has probably never been used and that's it! Takes about 5 minutes.

 

*You can add a switch here if you want. Just connect one end of the resistor to one of the wires in the connector (doesn't matter which one) and the other end of the resistor to one side of the switch. Then connect a wire from the other side of the switch to the other wire in the connector. This will allow you to turn Twilight Mode on and off."

Hmm, i just tryed it again, and still no luck. I wonder why?

 

Where abouts in the owners manual does it mention pressing the dome overide button four times, i have tryed looking but have been unable to find it yet. If i could get it to work that way it would be great.

 

I think the reason it doesn't work on Canadian trucks is it interferes with the daytime running lights, and its illegal to not have drl's on when the vehicle is in motion or something to that effect. But if it is dark and the key is on, so are my headlights, even with the parkbrakes on. It gets a little anoying if i'm idling the truck to let it defrost the windows or warm up.

 

I know its being a little nit-picky, but the options there so i would like to see it work. I really don't want to mess with the wiring unless i have to, so i'll leave that as a last resort.

 

My headlight switch has four positions, Off (its only a momentary contact) Auto, Park lights, and Headlights, you are supposed to be able to shut off the automatic headlights once they are on by turning the headlight switch to the to the off postion, (its in the owners manual too, its only a tempary thing, and only lasts as long as the key is on i believe) it just doesn't do anything on my truck. I was told that a dealership in the states could make it work, but not one here because they can't get that vic code from gm, if i could get ahold of one myself i might be able to get it done here.

It's VCI not VIC. We have to call GM to get a VCI number for special programming. GM knows by your vin you're in Canada and therefore would not give us a code to allow you to turn off DRL's.
