Gear Indication Problem

It has come to my attention in the past few days that when I shift my truck into neutral I am no longer getting any indication on the instrument cluster. All other positions P/D/3/2/1 indicate properly and the transmission is operating as advertised. I have also noticed that when i do move the shift lever into neutral that the indication lights seem to sequence backwards towards P rather rapidly but after that happens no indication is observed. Has anyone experienced or corrected this problem? Any help would be much appreciated. BTW it's an 02 Silverado w/ a 5.3L and obviously an automatic trans. Thanks...

The multifunction switch in the steering collum might need to be replaced. It has the switch for the shift lever indicator. How many miles?

Mine will cease indicating (the letters are still there, but the illuminated square background disappears) when I pull back on the shift lever. I can't recall if that's the way it's always worked. I only started taking notice a few months ago. I too have noticed on occasion the slow response to indicate the selected gear.

It's got 55K on it. It's not a big deal but since I am sort of anal about such things I'd rather get it fixed. Thanks...
