4 Wheel Auto...is it working?

So I just got my 01 Sierra 1500 back from the dealer. They installed a new front transfer case and front diff. I put a rock through the old one.

So on the dash are 4 buttons, one for 4 wheel auto, 2 wheel drive, 4 hi and 4 low. When I push 2 wheel drive, 4 hi and 4 low they work fine. But I can't tell if the 4 wheel auto is functioning the way it should be. I know that it works by sensing the road conditions and puts power to the wheels when needed. But it seems when I push that button that it goes into 4 HI.

An example of this is at slow speed in a parking lot, when I make a sharp turn the front wheels "chirp" as I am turning. Like if it was in 4 HI or 4 LO. I don't recall this happening before with the old transfer case and diff. Before I take it back to the dealer, can someone try this with there 4 wheel auto button and see if the tires chirp while in 4 wheel auto. I can't remember if it was like this before the fix..

Any Ideas?? Thanks.....John

If I remember correctly, the front end is engaged when in "Auto" (drive shaft etc...). The only thing that is disengaged is the transfer case.

When the rear wheels slip, the transfer case hooks up the front of the truck.

With the front end engaged, but still free-wheeling from the transfer case, I could see how your steering would feel a little "bound up" while doing dry parking lot manuvers.

Sounds normal to me also. Mine acts the same way. I only use AUTO when there is some slip to the road like wet or snow. It will bind a bit on dry pavement when turning sharply (like parking).

BTW - You only have 1 tranfer case so it's not really the front transfer case.
