Yukon XL 4x4 Conversion

Hi, I'm new to the forum and own a 2003 Yukon XL 1500 2x4. I am moving to the northeast and will need to use it in bad weather. Is there a conversion kit or a way to convert my 2x4 to a 4x4 that won't break the bank?

To answer your question, no, not really. It'll be cheaper to trade the truck in and get a new one with 4x4.

Honestly, the 4x4 is a nice feature to have in the snow, but it certainly isn't necessary. If you're really concerned about it though, you'd probably have better luck, and get more bang for your buck by putting in a locking differential, or investing in a good set of studded snow tires.

 

I would guess that adding a locking differential would be somewhere between $1,000 - $1,500, but that's just a guess. The snow tires would be around $400-$500 from Costco.

 

Remember, all the 4 wheel drive does is help you start moving on snow & ice. It doesn't do a thing to help you stop or steer once you're moving. The snow tires will help you start, stop & steer. That would be my choice, and that's what I upgraded our vehicles with when we moved from Southern California.
