If it is the same problem with that I had it is a reasonably simple fix if you have simple soldering skills. If you remove the cluster (pull dash trim off and 4 screws to remove luster), you can pull the back cover off the odo/gear selector display. I had a OBVIOUS cold solder joint. Apply heat and a little solder and it works great. Mine has been going on 50K with no problems since soldering.

 

If you don't feel confident, call your dealer and ask where they send out their clusters. They will probably fix it for you for around $75.

My 2000 has been going on and off. I'll have to check the solder joints. Thanks for the info.

I have also seen the ignition switch cause this problem on the older style (94-99) trucks
