Swapping wheels from 16" to 17"...

My tahoe came stock with 16" wheels. I have a friend with a Tahoe who nicely gave me a set of 17" wheels and tires that came on hers.

I'd like to swap them to my truck as I always wanted the 17's anyhow. Does anyone know for absolute sure or not if I need to have my computer recalibrated for the tire/wheel size change?

Also, what about the Tire Pressure Monitors? Will I be able to sync up the monitors in the 17" wheels? I know the 17's have them, but since they operate on radio signal, I'm not sure if they will work or need to be changed/adjusted for my specific vehicle.

1. Depends on tire size. 265/75/16 and 265/70/17 are the same OD. Same with 245/75/16 and 245/70/17.

2. No idea.

As long as the tire diameters are the came (or within a couple of percent) they will work.

As for the new monitors, they may simply need to be re-calibrated to work properly. You might find something in the owner's manual or the dealer can handle it for you. Should only take a few minutes to re-calibrate.

Interesting. The new tires are P265/70/17 and when I roll them up and compare against the stock P265/75/16 they look to have a larger OD.

Both of them are 31.7" in OD. Maybe the tread has worn off on your old set?

I just replaced my 245/70/17 with 265/65/17 Goodyears to get a wider tire with the same OD, as my old General AmeriCraps.

Measure center line out to top of tire on both...they'll be a difference because there's no weight on the tire if side by side.

Also, if your current tire is worn it will be smaller, of course.

Ok, I found out what's going on here. I checked my stock tires today and they are 265/70/16 NOT 265/75/16. So there's the difference.

So starting over...does the computer need to be adjusted going from 265/70/16 to 265/70/17? I would think so.

It'll put you 2 mph off at 60. Up to you on whether or not that needs adjustment ;).

..or you could buy 265/65/17. Computer adjustment should cost no more than half an hours labor at the stealer.

I don't believe 265/70/16 was ever an option with the 16s. Look at the tire sticker (decal) whatever on the inside of the driver's door jam to see what size tire came on the Tahoe in the first place.

Well I bought the truck new in Jan. '06 and that's what it came with. Maybe it was something new for '06. I wanted the 17's all along because they just look more rugged, give the truck a bit of a lift, and fill the wheel wells better. It would have forced me to get an LT or Z71 package and that equalled more $$$$$$.

OK, OK. If that's really what came on the SUV, than do what Ape0r suggested. The 17" tire will be 1 inch larger in OD than the 16". Unless you go with a 265/65/17, which as I indicated above I'm currently running on my sierra. However, from what you've written you desire the look of the 1" extra OD offered by the 70 series tire. The ECM calibration should be no big deal. However, remember, that changing the OD also effectively changes your overall rear axle ratio. That's the main reason, I kept the same diameter when I changed tires. I have a 3.23, and I didn't want to make it any taller. The shorter sidewall, IMO, also makes for a little more crisp handling.

Sorry for digging up an old post but... new member so needed a thread with the right title

Anyway I have a 2005 Suburban 2500 with the stock 16" polished alloy rims (8 lug of course) and I'm planning making a few changes (first on the list is getting rid of the rake) one of which is replacing those with wheels that would better fit a tire to fill the wheel wells (285/70/17).

So the question is... is the backspacing the same between the wheels I have and what I would get with a 17" alloy take-off from a 05-07 2500HD?
