4x4 switch issue

I have a 98 Silverado, 5.7 4x4 with electronic transfer. When I push the button for 4x4 it blinks for a few seconds and goes out, not engaging the 4 wheel drive. This has happened in the past and if I pressed the button a few times it would finally engage. Also had problems unengaging the 4x4. Now I get nothing.

 

I trust I don't need a new tranfser case. I have tried to research this on the web and am finding some vaccuum stuff but nothing definitive.

 

Any ideas?
