Water Leak

I took my floor mats out yesterday to vacuum and noticed the carpet was damp on the front drivers side. I took the drivers seat out and peeled the carpet back to find the carpet insulation saturated. There wasn't any water on top of the mat so it must be finding its way under the carpet. The channel on top of the rocker where wiring runs along to the back is also wet. There is very little rust and no odour so this must be a recent leak.

 

The grommets in the firewall, parking brake cable grommet all appear to be in place and the truck had a new windshield installed a year ago before I purchased it. The door seal looks to be okay and properly installed.

 

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, did you find the cause and a remedy? Also does anyone know of any TSB's on this matter.

I am having this same leak on my 1999 2500. Where did you end up finding out where the water was coming from?

The water was dripping out of the bottom of the inside door panels and running behind the door seal filling up the wiring channel under the plastic rocker panel threshold moulding, then overflowing into the insulation under the carpet.

 

There is a water barrier behind the door panel and a piece of plastic inside the door intended to direct water away from the speakers. Mine was distorted at the bottom directing the water against the water barrier which had lost its seal to the inside of the door.

 

I cut another piece of plastic a little wider and longer to fit behind the speaker to direct any water closer to the bottom of the door. I then taped the the water barrier thouroughly to the inside of the door with TUCK TAPE (very sticky and resistant to moisture) which is used in home construction for taping seams in vapour barriers. Found at any home depot insulation isle.

 

To find the leak I just ran the garden hose over the roof and the door glass for a couple of minutes. Open the doors and dry off the seal at the bottom of the door, wait a few minutes and if it leaks you will see water drops comming out of the bottom of the door panel above the inside door seal.

 

Hopefully this is your problem because it was a really easy cheap repair. Worse part was getting the floor and carpet insulation dry.
