truck died

I was sitting and idling and truck died everything else was still working. Tried to restart and it would not start I stopped and waited for 3 minutes and it started. No codes came up and it ran fine the next 7 miles home. It cut out on me two other times going down the road the red voltage light came on for and split second and then it went off and it continued normally. does anyone have any ideas about what this might be?

I agree.

It's a pretty common problem. Just about everybody I know with that engine has had to replace the crank position sensor.

Another good tech tip for the 8.1L. Looks to be an EZ item to replace. Would it be an item to have as a spare for breakdown or does it give you some warning its crapping out like dalez unit is? What about the camshaft position sensor is it the same faults as the crankshaft sensor?

My cam sensor died, but the crank sensor is still original with no symptoms (yet).

Had the same thing happen to me last year. Cam sensor was the problem.

Do you happen to have a step by step procedure for replacing the crank sensor. My truck's been undriveable for months now and the new sensor has finally arrived (I'm in New Zealand) I just went to install it but I can only just see its connector from underneath and can only get a fingertip to it. From the top,I can't even get a hand to it! Any help appreciated, cheers, Gordon

My dad and I did mine last year. First we took out the plug. Then we used a 10mm wrench I think to take out the screw. A gear wrench would be great if you have one. Then being very very careful we used two very long screw drivers to push up on the sensor being careful not to break it. If I remember right our old one had 2 or 3 o-rings on it so they were a little tough to get out. Then reverse to put the new one in. We did everything form the bottom. You can't see any thing though. From the top would be much worse.

When I did my (diesel truck mechanics) apprenticeship in the early 70's New Zealand was still in love with the last trucks to come out of the UK.I thought at the time that the English designerds must be absolutely nuts. Over the years though I got quite good at reaching into invisible dark places and working with one fingertip. That skill has long gone I'm afraid and it looks like the same designerds have been at work here. cheers, I doubt I'll do it myself, I'll try to find a mechanic I absolutely hate!

I had mine done at a shop and it took 8 hours and $800 of my bucks! They had to remove the whole intake manifold to be able to reach it. It might be something to do with the right hand drive conversion maybe. Bloody expensive project this one from start to finish and I still don't know if it is going to work - but should find out this weekend. cheers
