Passlock & Spare Keys

Recommended Posts

With the Passlock system, is there anything special about the key used, other than it must be "correct"? I'm looking to have a few spares made, and am wondering if this is something I can have done at the local hardware store, or if I would need to see a dealer.

Thanks!

I had this done on my 03 Suburban at Home Depot. There is no special key, unless it has the little pill looking chip in the key itself.

Mine did not have this.

Hope this helps.

I bought a couple of GMC blanks off of Ebay and had my local hardware store cut them to match. My truck has the PASSLOCK 2 system on everyone that I've talked to tells me that there is nothing special about the key itself - all the electronics are in the lock cylinder.

Good luck! :D

Nitrous,

You are correct about this, all the electronics are in the Lock column, as I had to tap into them to install a remote start about 2 weeks ago, and sure enough theres a few wires that handle all of the information being passed to start the car.

I just finished up a remote start install on my Z71 yesterday. Rather than tapping into the Passlock system directly, I used a DEI 457GW Databus interface module that solved a couple of problems. It allows for proper operation of the Passlock system and it makes interfacing with the door lock system very simple.

I also used a 791 Bypass module from Bulldog Security and a XK01 to tie into the ODBII databus connector. So I did also cheat, lol just had to get to the wires on the column to hook it all in.

I love mine, got the LCD version and thats worth it. It says it works 1/2 mile, but thats crazy, maybe about 1000 feet, but thats still pretty good.

Which base model did you use? I'm have the 561R and 457GW installed. Anything extra or additional? Did yourself or at shop?

Any problems? and did all work when complete (factory alarm, door locks, etc.).

I used a Mega 3700 alarm/remote start from Asianwolf.com as the base unit. I had this unit on my previous vehicle and I kept it when I traded the car in. I did both installs myself.

Everything works, but there are a few little quirks that I need to look into yet. Apparently because of the delayed/dimming dome light feature, the alarm system believes that one of the doors is still open. If I arm the system immediately after closing the door, it tells me that the drivers door is still open. If I wait for the dome light to turn off, then everything is fine.

Mine works fine, my Bulldog Deluxe 500 system has a feature in it that you can program for this. It allows it to set it to armed once the domelight goes off, so I can just hit the button walk away and then it does its things.

The installs are pretty easy, just basically going through and tying into the correct wires under the Steering wheel. I have done 2 in the past and about to do my wifes, just make sure that you have everything you need before you start on it and you should be fine.

The Kits to tie into the ODBII port make it super easy, its almost a given that you must have this for the GM cars, unless you want to add about 4 hours to the install, to make the door locks work.

Also some good wiring information is at www.bulldogsecurity.com, which is where my Remote Start came from. I purchased it off Ebay, but it is from this company and its the Deluxe 500 Model with the LCD Remote and all.
