Chances are it's either the AutoTrac switch panel or a sensor in the transfer case. The switch assembly is noted for poor solder connections (my 2WD light is out about 75% of the time I'm driving. Some folks hve gone into the assembly and re-soldered the indicator light connection but a new unit can be had for under $50.

I was getting the Service 4WD message almost daily until I had to use the Auto selection when we had some snow and freezing rain. It hasn't come on for two weeks so maybe for mine it was just using the AutoTrac system.

I'm not sure where the sensor is or the cost of it, but I would think it would be easily accessible and not cost a lot.

Its probably the 4WD switch in your dash there, VERY common problem. Switch has to be replaced, usually takes care of the issue. Had the same problem on my truck. :D

Had the same exact problem on my 2000 Silverado, pulled the dash switch out, took it apart and resoldered the connector pins to the PCB, works fine now. A friend of mine had the same problem on his 2000 Silverado, dealer changed the sensors and it didn't fix it. Then they replaced the dash switch, that fixed it. $850 later
