Wiper Arm Removal

poorboy

Question

Posted

Hey, 2002 silverado. Passenger side wiper no longer works. I was driving home in an ice storm and heard a loud bang under the cowl and it quit working.

Went to remove the wiper arms and cowl to inspect the linkage and cannot get the wiper arms off the posts.

Is there a clip or button I'm missing? or is it just a tapered spline that is on super tight. The nuts came off fine, but the arms are not budging.

Once in there, what can I expect. I can see the drag link that runs from the passenger arm moving when I rotate the arm by hand. There is a white nylon button, about the size of a quarter, on the end of this arm that is not connected (now) to anything.

Please Help...so close, but yet so far.

Once the nuts are of you should be able to remove them by using a rocking/lifting motion. This is according to the manual I was reading.

The arm is an tapered, interference fit on the shaft it mounts to and sometimes can be a real pain to get off. Sometimes just rocking it like mentioned may do it. We've also used various kinds of pullers... like the kind that's designed to pull a battery cable off of a top post type battery.

 UPDATE:

Purchased a wiper arm puller from partsamerica for 11.88 and popped them off with no problems. Once inside the white nylon button is really the socket on the end of each drag link that accepts a steel ball on the oposing arm. These ball and socket connection appear to be designed in a manner that allows them to release once max. resistance is encountered i.e., ice buildup.

All in all it is a very easy fix and took about 20 min. once the wiper arms are removed. Have no fear and jump in and get it done.
