Fuel filter

I was talking to my dad about how I would tell if a fuel filter needed changeing. He said that if you take it off and blow through it, in the direction of flow, that will tell you how blocked it is. He also said that I should replace it anyway, they are cheap and if your going to take it off anyway, why not put a new one on.

My question is this. Does the blow test hold any weight? I took the old one off and blew as hard as I could through it and other then a little bit of fuel for the first second or two I blew, I could hardly get any air through at all.

My thinking that it wouldn't matter if it were dirty at all is that if a fuel filter is full of fuel you still aren't going to get much through it anyway once the media fills up. So even a new filter won't be able to be blown through very much until the filter sits and the media drys out.

Is it usefull to cut my old one open?

New one is already on and running fine. Just curious if I can learn anything by cutting the old one open like you would an oil filter.

I could blow through the new one easily. My head would have exploded trying to blow threw the old one. I could get air threw it, but I had to blow pretty good.

I think that should help my fuel economy for my trip to WI.
