VIN association with Key Code

I know there's a way to use a vehicle's VIN number to obtain a key. I think the process is very unsecure and way too easy to abuse for the pruposes of auto theft.

Is there a way to opt out of having this information available? Is there an alternative?

How much does it cost to replace the ignition switch with one using a different key?

i had to have a key cut from the vin code once when i locked my keys in my truck. it wasnt that easy to obtain. The dealership wanted proof of ownership of the vehicle along with a photo ID. Unfortunatly the registration papers were in the truck so when i got to the dealership they took a photo copy of my drivers license

Thats great.... if the theif isn't the guy that orders the keys. But then there has to be some sort of paper trail to show who ordered keys for what VINs

1. Dealers have very high requirements for getting keys cut for a customer that walks in the door. Of course we all know there are plenty of crooked people out there, so it's definitely not 100% secure. If you go into a dealer and they don't ask you for your driver's license, title or other proof of ownership of the vehicle that needs the key, etc., then turn around and walk out.

2. I don't know. You could call Customer Assistance (800-222-1020) and ask them. They may even be the ones that can do it.

3. I don't know parts prices, but keep in mind you'll want to be replacing the ignition LOCK CYLINDER not the ignition SWITCH. Two different animals and they are available separately.

Oh piffle. If that joint isn't asking for ID for a fresh set of keys? I'm not leaving, I'm walking out on the lot and pulling the VIN off of a CC Duramax. :D

Piffle? I'm not saying the place won't do it for you, just wanted to let him know that if they'll do it for you, they'll do it for the next guy that walks in with YOUR VIN wanting a key cut.
