Replacing the 4L60E AGAIN!

In August I just rebuilt my 4L60E in my 97 gmc 1500 Z71 4x4 and it did great but only for 5000 miles! I was towing a mild load of about 4000lbs and it looks like the front pump went out about 150 miles into the towing trip. I was towing in overdrive. Since then I was told not to tow load in overdrive. I am going to take out the transmission and I am considering putting a 4L80E in or a better heavier duty rebuild kit. What are your suggestions?

A bigger transmission isn't necessarily better. It'll leech your engine power and it'll wear out your mechanicals faster. I'd just rebuild the 4L60E or get one of those beefed up versions from Monster or B&M.

There's no way towing a 4000 pound trailer in od would toast your trans. It's a lot more likely it was rebuilt wrong, or the crud in the cooling lines wasn't flushed and old chunks toasted your new pump.

This sounds like the case. I've pulled almost 6000 lbs in OD with a 4L60E and had no problems. My parents also took their stock 700R4 (4L60) to 90,000 miles, about 30% of that towing a 9,000 lb travel trailer in overdrive. Sounds like a s**tty rebuild.
