2.2 Timing Chain

I am working on a 1995 2.2 4 cylinder. I am pretty experienced working on engines, but not this particular animal. I am replacing the timing set and chain tensioner on this engine. It didn't have any power and There was noise coming from the timing cover so I tore it down and sure enough, the tensioner was all chewed up and the chain had a lot of play in it, I figured it may have jumped a tooth, no problem...right?

 

So, I went out and bought a haynes manual just for the heck of it. And before I took the cam sprocket and chain off I lined up the mark on the cam sprocket to the tab on the tensioner (that's where the book said it goes) and the mark on the crank gear was WAY off. I'm wondering how it was running at all at this point. So, I go get the new parts and lined the marks up like the book says and it won't start. I know the cam timing is off because the motor turns over real fast like it's not making compression. I have compared the new gears to the old ones and they are the same. I have no idea how to get this thing in time, either the book is wrong or something really freaky is going on here.

 

Any Ideas?

I had almost same problem with daughters truck this summer turns out even it just being a 4 popper it can and will still bend valves when it goes to far out of time. We learned this after having it towed 65 miles and putting it into the shop for repairs, the tech warned us that we could pull the head and check to see if there were any problems or we could take a chance and just replace the gears and chain, because of her needing to go to school on the next weekend we tried to go the fast way out. After changing parts it would start and run but the check engine light would come on and it would idle with a slight miss!! Oh well it is sitting here waiting for me to get a chance to replace the head and get her running again. I might like that 30 mpg the little truck gets. (NOT)

Looking into buying a 2000 S-10, engine turns over as if the timing is off a tooth. So these engines ARE intereference engines and can bend the valves? I'm getting it for 200bux, adding a 200 dollar tow to my shop. Looks easy enough to work on.
