Overriding the "recircultaing" air turning off?

Is there any way to override the "feature" that turns off the recirculating air when the defroster is on?

I got stuck behind a semi last night that was belching enough smoke to totally cover the highway. It was cold enough that I needed the defroster on, or my window would start freezing up. I had to smell the smoke for quite a while before I could get out from behind the semi, since Chevy decided that I shouldn't be able to turn the recirculating air on when the defroster is on.

On my old Civic, there was a way to override the A/C compressor cycling by pressing a combination of buttons on the dash. Is there anything like that on our trucks? This is a 2006 work truck, with the manual dual climate controls.

Nope, they've been like that since trucks had AC in the pre '87 bodystyle. GM isn't the only one either.
