Just thought I'd share my recent findings...

She knocks. :)   I hit 3500 miles Sunday with no knocking.  Was beginning to think I was safe from it.  Nope.  3800 miles and sounds like a diesel engine.  CRAP!  Oh well.  I guess mine wasn't immune from it either.  Probably no sense in taking it to the dealer either as from what I've seen posted from people with this problem is that GM's official statement is that it's normal.  Great.  Just friggin great.  I hear there are people with Camaro's and TA's with this problem too.

Sort of makes me wonder if I should have bought that 'gulp'  02 RAM back in September. :D  Yeah, it would've been underpowered but, would that gasser sound like a diesel at less than 4000 miles?

Maybe I should just put the 40 series mufflers back on and

fuggedaboutit.

Take it in anyway steve and have the problem documented. If they ever do come up with a fix, you'll be in line for it. Also required for the extended engine warranty GM customer service is issuing for these knocking engines.

You guys just need to run that Vortec like its suppose to be ran. I have ran my truck pretty good since I have had it. I dont mean abuse it. Just rev it out every no and then and get rid of all the carbon. I now have 12000 miles and no knock.** Knock on wood. **

Agree w/ 2001 HD, get it in and documented fully, including talking to Chevy (or GMC) customer support and get a case number.  Let them know in no uncertain terms you're really upset about this.

We keep hearing smatterings of rumors, etc about a fix (unofficial, of course), but right now - well you know their official position.  It may never change, and it might.  Who knows?  ???

Good luck.

1BADHD,

What software are you using to make the cool signature pics?

Mine has 5,200 miles on it, and it knocks on cold start for the first minute or so and then goes away.  No foul, no harm.  Engine pulls as strong as a gorilla.  A guy who's car I towed remarked as I pulled out of a tollbooth that my truck with his car on back accelerated faster than his wifes car period.

Even if it grenades itself, it just gives me more of an excuse to tear it down and build it.  :)

I've been tossing the idea around today to have it at least documented.

Then again, I like CMNTMXR81's suggestion too.  If it goes, then that would be a good time to build up a new stronger motor.  I like the truck alot as is, so I would be hard pressed to get rid of it in the hopes of not getting another knocker.  I don't have the bucks to just get another one right now anyway.  Time to start putting cash away for a trashed motor fund!  :)

Update, I looked at my odo today. I'll have 4000 on it by the end of the weekend.

Are all these motors made at the same plant? Was there any changes during the model year?

Once in awhile I'll get a little rattle out of mine when I first start it.  I don't like it, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.  :)

I have an appt Wednesday to take it in.  I've already accepted that nothing can be done about it, at this time, but I guess it's peice of mind that it's at least documented with them.

It doesn't seem to have any loss of power problems or noises when warmed up.  Just when cold.  There is a LOUD ping, chirp, whistle? kind of noise at start up that seems to have become progressively louder with the warmer weather.  That too, disappears once driven a few miles.

I think I'll definately have the 40 series flows welded back on there.  Interior resonance de damned! LOL  :)

oh we are opening up this can of worms.. haha knock is that the noise i hear every day??? its not as bad since i went to rotella and lucas oil stabilizer but i still hear it ive had mines since jan 18 i have 12k miles on it and its knocking.. but its better now since i chaned oil. hauled 30k pounds this weekend total weight. and run like a beast.. just a little pinging figured that was bad gas. oh well. good luck. and everything i talk to gm about its normal no matter what it is its always normal so just live with it or leave it. thats just my .02 cents.   :)

The noise i hear in mine isn't anything more than what I've heard in any of my other vehicles with aluminum heads, and it definatly isn't as bad as the 3.1L and 3.4L V-6's that GM makes... (I've owned both of those motors).  I also had an all aluminum Saturn with the dbl overhead cam and it would make noises until it warmed up...

Like Steve's doing, I'll have mine documented at my next service...
