2006 steering shaft fix

My 2006 GMC Sierra developed the bumping steering column problem at 20K miles. The dealer "fixed" it by what he called "recycling the intermediate steering shaft" which I understand means to move the shaft back and forth to recirculate the grease inside. The service rep said that it was probably a temporary fix and that I might have to bring it in every 6 months or so to have it re-fixed. She said that GM would continue to do this free of charge until the vehicle reaches 100,000 miles. I am wondering if anyone has been recycling the shaft themselves and if so, how is it done. Can you do it from under the hood or do you have to get underneath the truck? I would rather do it myself if it is not too much trouble. Taking one to the dealer is worse than getting a root canal for me. If this had been a Honda, it would have been recalled and permanently fixed, although, I would never consider buying a Ridgeline wanabe truck.
