Re-drill holes to install aftermarket speakers?

whatup all. I am looking to install aftermarket speakers (6-3/4 and 4x6). I have been reading in crutchfield and other sites that re-drilling holes is necessary to fit the aftermarket speakers. Is this true? Have you installed speakers and did you have to drill? Intuitively it seems like you should be able to take out the old ones and just drop in new ones...

In all the installs I've done (not a ton, but I've done all my own), I'd say it's about 50/50 on whether or not new holes are needed.

so then I take it that it depends on what speakers you are installing.

Exactly. If your speaker screw holes line up with the factory screw holes already there, then you just put some screws in, peice of cake. If they dont line up, either you have to drill some new holes or else just use some self-drilling screws and just screw em in! Still a peice of cake, lol!

Mine were clipped in by two one on top one on bottom so i had to drill holes but i had no problem doing so.

Yours is the same year as mine, just a GMC instead of a Chevy. I had to get some speaker wiring harness adapters from Crutchfield so that I could just plug my new speakers right into the harness for the old ones. When it came to screwing the speakers in, I did have to drill 4 1/8" holes for each speaker. The factory speakers didn't use any screws, they had clips on them and they just "clipped" into the door (which was probably why mine rattled so much). A tip: peel the foam around the edge of ths stock speakers off and stick it onto the old speakers before installation to reduce the chance of your new speakers rattling.

Did you say 6 3/4" fronts? I am installing 6.5" in the front cause that is what the stocks are. But you do have the rear speaker size right.

ive installed ALOT of speakers on gm trucks. depends on what brand and size you get.

 

but alot and most of the times, you have to drill some holes. put some 6.5 in the front and if you want, you can put 6x9's in the back with some cutting of the metal.

Yep, what this guy said...I have a 2000 GMC Sierra and it only had the clips, so I had to drill some holes. Metal is pretty thin so its not really that hard to do. Good luck
