Spare Tire Storage - Wtf!?!

Recommended Posts

OK, so I'm checking the air in the tires of the '02 the other day. Being the smart guy that I am, figured I'd check the air in the spare while I'm at it. DOOOOHHHHHH!! Apparently somebody had the spare off and reinstalled it upside down, so that the valve stem was on the top and inaccessable.....NOT SO!!! Just looked at the owners manual while trying to find a part number and, low and behold, the instructions for storing the spare (page 5-32) say to mount it WITH THE VALVE STEM POINTED UPWARD!! How stupid is that?!?!?!

Before I go through the motions, does anybody know if the tire will secure if flipped, with the valve stem pointed down, so I can check the air in the dang thing??? I don't know why it wouldn't, as the '02 does not have the secondary latch system like my '04 does. On a side note, the owners manual for the '04 says to mount it valve stem down.....

I dont know if it will damage anything by haning it the other way, but i do know on several GM trucks if you wind the wheel retainter up to far, you will break it. that could be why they say to do it such a way?

That's retarded! On my 03 Sub spare is mounted w/stem down, from the factory. Wonder if they discovered their stupidity and changed begining in 03? Did I mentioned that is stupid! Sheesh.

But you raise a good point...... check those spares!
