Dumb Question?

I hope this isn't a dumb question but what does the LBZ mean and how do I know what engine my '06 Duramax is. Other than LBZ what else is out there, the difference, etc.

LBZ is the build code that is used to identify what was ordered by the dealer when the truck is built. In order to for sure know which engine you have you would need to know what the VIN letter is. (I am not sure).

 

The differant versions

 

LB7 (01-somewhere in 03) - 300 hp 520 tq

 

LLY (somewhere in 03-06) - 310 hp 605 tq

 

LBZ* (06-07) - 360 hp 650 tq

 

NEW - LMM (07 GMT 900) - 365 hp 660 tq

 

*in 06 I believe either the LLY or the LBZ could be ordered, if there is a duramax/allison emblem on the door then it is a LBZ, if there is just a duramax emblem then it is a LLY

 

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong about something.

The LB7 was until 04.5 when the LLY came out. The LLY at the time was 310hp and 590 torque. Then an upgraded LLY came out for 06 which was the 310hp and 605 torque you are talking about S-Ten. This LLY was a detuned LBZ and then came the LBZ halfway through the model year I believe. Everything else S-Ten has stated was correct to my knowledge.

My door does say ALLISON DURAMAX. I also looked at the window sticker that came on my truck and it doesn't say LBZ anywhere on it but it does say 360hp 650ft lbs so I must have the LBZ. Thanks for the info guys.

Look at the tag inside of the glovebox, you'll find either LLY, or LBZ in amongst all of the other codes.
