Westers Tune 8.1

I have a tune waiting in my garage to be put it. I just got the truck last week and wanted to drive it a bit before I put the tune in, so I see what I wuold notice different. If anyone has some comments please post them. I already know that the 8.1 is a friggin moster :cool: I guess when I get a few minutes I will toss her in and see, Thanks

I have to say I was a little disappointed with mine. I removed most of the torque management and I think I did the 87-89 tune and tire correction to 265/75/R16. I don't think I felt much power difference and my gas mileage didn't change at all.

 

I specified mileage more important than power.

 

The shifting did get more firm and I think that is where I feel the slight power gain.

 

Lot of money for the results.

 

I am going to put 285 or 305 tires on and get a retune for the tire correction. I might step up to a more aggressive tune.

 

I'm not complaining about lack of power by any means, but I guy could always use more. I still smirk every time I jump on the interstate.

 

I can't help wondering if I put a stock tune back in, if I would notice more of a difference. It is easier for me to feel loss of power than a gain in power.

Well I just upgraded from the 6.0 so the stock 8.1 is insane. Like I said I wantedto drive it for a little while to get a base line. I should have time to put it in this weekend, I will be sure topost the results, Jesse

I would like to think that a cold air intake, mass air flow sensor and the tune would show you the best results. The combination of the three should make a huge difference!

Recieved my Wester's tune late last week and installed the new PCM Monday evening. The weather has been a little wet around here since then, so I haven't had a chance to get the truck out of the garage. I plan on taking it for a spin this evening, so I'll post some results tomorrow. And it is a 93 tune.... Guess I need to get some octane booster on the way home from work...

Finally got to drive the truck yesterday evening to test out the new Wester's pcm. I had idled it Monday evening after the password re-learn and it threw no codes. The truck was near empty so I went down to the local gas station and mix about 20 gallons of 91 octane with Lucas Oil Octane Booster. Still no codes and I didn't do the crank re-learn.

 

I had a 2001 K2500HD SB with the 8.1 and 6 speed manual... That truck was flat out impressive... I always disliked the amount of power the Allison robbed from the 8.1L after having the 6 speed manual combo. When I bought my 2006 8.1L, I always wished it felt more like the 01 truck. Well, now that's not a problem with the new pcm. This new tune is just flat out impressive from a standing start. Instant response with the rear duals fighting to maintain traction. If you get this tune, you will just laugh everytime you hear one of the diesel guys talk about the throttle response of the LBZ, LMM, or what ever the latest flavor is.. You'll be at 35mph while the diesel is still thinking about spooling up it's turbo. Instant power from idle...

 

I had Wester's remove most of the torque management, and also allow the engine to rev to 5500rpms while in the manual mode for the Allison. Acceleration is best when running in the manual mode and shifting at 5500rpms. Transmission will still shift at 4800rpms while running in the D mode. I also had them remove the speed limiter and maintain stock programming in the tow/haul mode for pulling heavy. I haven't tested the stock programming in the tow/haul mode yet, I'll try to do that this weekend.

 

I very happy with the results of the 93 tune.

I have had the 93 tune in my 2001 Sierra 2500HD for over

a year and I still love it. Don't like the gas milage but I love the

power.

2004 CC/SB 8.1/Allison 4x4. Volant intake and Westers tune (corrected for tires, asked to give best MPG / Power mix). Was getting 8.5-9 MPG around town when I got the truck. After intake and tune my MPG slowly started to climb. Getting 10.5-11 around town and 12-14 highway. Plenty of power. Truck never seems to work hard at anything.

Thrown it on the dyno yet? Curious as to the HP/torque increase.

IMHO... If you have an allison transmission, I wouldn't recommend it. And why would you want to have to fill-up with premium fuel all the time with a gas guzzler like the 8.1 when you don't have to? You're better off in the long run to keep it stock. That engine/tranny combo is plenty of power already.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
