Oil Starving?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I bought my '06 Silvy CC 4x4 in January, with about 9600 miles on it. Changed the oil when the oil life monitor was less than 10%, to Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30.

Now, when I start the truck, it sounds oil starved for a couple of seconds. No funny noises, except that it just coughs a little until the revs come up to idle. Enough oil in the engine.

Should I be worried? Should I do anything?

I've used that oil and I've never had that problem.

Could be the filter. The filters for these trucks are supposed to have the anti-drainback valve. If you did not use the correct filter or the filter is defective that could be your problem.

I just swithced to Platinum Plus in my 03 Siverado after 86K of Mobil 1 with no problems, and a reduction in piston slap when first starting up.

Even if the filter has no anti drain back valve it would make absolutely no difference in a 5.3 l engine as the oil filter is mounted upside down on the bottom of the engine. If the filter was on top of the engine and mounted pointing down (like in an LT5 engine in the ZR1 Corvette), an anti drain back valve is critical.

I'm no expert, but I've read other posts here in which people make a big deal about using a filter without the anti drainback valve (i.e. make sure the filter has the anti drainback valve).

I can see where even with the filter on the bottom if the oil flows against gravity in one direction when the engine is running, but oil would want to drain back in the opposite direction when the engine is off then the valve may be keeping the oil in the upper part of the engine for the next start-up.

Need someone to chime in who knows the details about the oil system.

not an oil related problem, sounds like a air/fuel issue

Yup.

Not an oil issue.

Based on the original post this started happening right after he changed his oil. How do you figure it as an air/fuel issue? Not saying it's not, I just don't understand why you're saying this.

I'm not saying it's a air/fuel issue I'm just agreeing it's not the oil.

I guess it was more a question for asepgrad98. I agree it would not be the oil.

No one has yet to comment on the if the anti-drainback valve could be the cause (i.e. problem with the oil filter). I think it does keep the oil in the block even though the filter is mounted on the bottom, but I could be wrong.

Sounds like fuel pump, dirty injectors, or intake air leak (possibly the intake gasket). Mine did the same thing, and it got worse when it was cold out. Changed the intake gasket and all is fine now. Unless you have a preoiler everyones engine is oil starved for a few seconds until it builds up oil pressure, anti drain back valve just keeps some oil in the system so it doesn't take as long to build up pressure.

I don't even remember starting this topic, but I have no issues now. Still using the same oil at 48K miles.
