Xm Hard Wiring Power

Recommended Posts

I have a 2007 NBS GMC Sierra Crew Cab and recently had an aftermarket XM radio installed (Audiovox Express). The installer at Best Buy says that the new 2007 Sierra's have a different type of power connection for the factory radio which doesn't allow him to tap into this for switched power. He was unable to find any other switched power source to utilize for the XM radio. He ultimately hard wired the XM radio into the fuse box but it is not switched.

This is a minor inconvenience. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or recommmendation for switched power on this unit?

Thanks,

Is this integrated through the factory head unit, or is it a separate unit with its own display? GM makes an XM kit for $225 that I installed in in little over an hour on my NBS '07 GMC, and works right through the head unit. Everything was plug and play. Kit came with a new antenna to replace the Onstar antenna, so both systems can share the same antenna. No additional holes to drill.

As far a switched source, PAC makes a unit that is used when adding an amp. I don't know if that can be used or not. The BCM controls so much any more. Much of the wiring in the new trucks as constant low voltage at all times. You have to be careful what you tap into on the new trucks, because you can fry the BCM, or cause other system features to blow fuses. I'm not a fan of tapping in at the fuse box. That's really not a good solution.

An option is to get a aftermarket headunit with XM capabilities. My pioneer has a sirius module, but you can get XM modules for any satelite ready unit. If you know the positive and negative or ground, at least on the older ones, you can hard wire them.
