Clutch Fan

Just wondering if there is anyway to tell if the clutch fan is working properly.............I drive in all kinds of conditions including real hot ones and i cant tell by the feel of the truck weather the fan is fully engaged or not...............On real hot days, with my A/C on, in stop and go traffic, my temp gauge really rises to the point where I shut the A/C off scared im going to overheat the engine.

I know in my Sonoma it is completely obvious when it is engaged. A loud roar from the engine bay as i accelerate. You can also notice a bog (slight loss of power) during acceleration. I would think it should be completely obvious with the v8 engines as well. Also, while in stopp n go traffic, once the needle rises above normal operating temp, it should kick in, and as you accelerate the needle should be moving down and not to a higher temp.

Thats kind of what I thought is supposed to happen.......................maybe my fan is always on or never fully engaged all the time because I notice no power or sound differences ever.

I would be interested in seeing a good answer to your question...My truck doesn't run hot but the a/c temp goes up 15-20 degrees when sitting at a light or stopped in summer. Dealer says it is normal...Some people have told me it sounds like a fan clutch problem. I would love to know how to check it.

When I had the truck in the other day the machanic said the clutch was almost done and thats why you could never hear my engine on acceleration (or at least until you were up in the 5000 range... ) Mine is engaged more than its not so I havnt noticed any abnormality in temperature, but if yours is not engaging when it should that would explain your temperature situation... Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

I'm going to go the e-fan route in my 99 silverado Z71....better cooling,and more power/better mileage...sounds like a win-win-win to me

Get the engine up to temperature (where you say you feel uncomfortable) and shut the truck off. Open the hood and see if you can spin the fan by hand. In theory, if the clutch is engaged (as it should be if the temp is showing over 210+) it should be very hard to spin.

Thanks for the tip................I shall try that and see.............today is supposed to be plenty hot and humid enough for me to run the AC and hopefully it gets good and hot and see if that works.
