anybody put an aftermarket mass airflow sensor in? I took a look at mine the other day for the first time. is the only difference that a performance one doesnt have the mesh screen?

Not unless its a larger diameter along with a CAI setup to take advantage of a bigger MAF. But I would suspect you'd need some good supporting mods to justify replacing your factory MAF.

Also, if you really wanted to, you can remove the screen from your factory MAF. I believe it's primarily here to even out the air flow to your MAF sensor so it gets a better reading. However, I don't think you'd see any significant gains by doing this either.

I pulled out the screen on mine. The Granatelli sensors are not any bigger diameter, but they claim to be recalibrated? For $350? No problems without the screen on my stock one. I can't really say I noticed a big difference, but the screen is definetley restricting airflow.

About 2 years ago I had the granatelli and it made my truck go crazy, so I took it out and replaced the stock back in. Also took the screen off with no problems Can't really tell the difference.

Wouldn't you need to reprogram the ecu if you are going to change the size of the maf? I would guess that the sensors are designed to work within a set volume of air...if you change the pipe size you are changing the volume of air that is around the sensors...the sensors would have no way of knowing how much or little air is passing. Changing the maf could cause the engine to run lean or rich.

The Granatelli sensors are not any larger in diameter than stock. They dont have screens, but supposedly they are programmed different. I think its a scam. The ECM should automatically adjust over time for increased airflow.

The GMT800 AMFS will support a 8.1 L engine so unless you have a big cam lots of head work its just a waste of money. The 01 to 04 ZO6 used the very same MAFS and made 405 hp.

Wasn't the ZO6 MAF descreened?

so what about after i put in the ram air setup i plan on doing in the future, would it then be worth it? or would getting a tune cancel the need for a new MAF?

The 04 ZO6 was descreened.

Be careful because I ordered a Predator and Granatelli sensor for Summit for my 03 Suburban, but I got bad codes. Don't remember which ones now, but Granatelli said that their sensor was not compatible with tuners because they both change the timing. I did use the sensor and Hypertech before on my 01 with no problems.
