Low Beam Plastic Hood

I have a 2006 Silverado 2500 HD with separate bulbs for high and low beams (but in one plastic housing) Over the low beam bulb there is a silver "hood" that appears to keep light from the low beam bulb from coming straight out of the bulb (only light reflected from behind the bulb can be reflected out). The Sylvania Silverstar replacement bulbs I just bought already have the tip of the bulb coated to prevent light from coming straight out the tip of the bulb so is this chrome hood inside the light housing redundant ( and can it be removed?) or will this screw up the low beam light pattern?

I think removing that would ruin the bulb. I dont think it will make your lighting any better, Thats how all new cars lights are.
