I don't know what happened?

Long story......

I purchased an 04 2500HD with the 6.0/4:10 combo a few months ago. I purchased the truck to tow a new fifth wheel camper I was going to purchase after the truck.

According to GM, I can pull right near 10,000lbs with this truck. While camper shopping I paid attention to the numbers and thought I was doing good. I purchased an 07 fifth wheel that claimed 7565 dry and 10,165 full. Since we are not loaded to the max, ever, I figured we were ok. The hitch weight is 1300lbs so that is not an issue, Truck squats less than 2in. I was able to weight the combo once and we sit at 14,500 ready to camp, the gcwr is right near 16,000. Again I figured we were looking good.

Than I went camping this weekend.

This is our 5th or 6th trip with this combo. But today, I pulled up in front of the house to put the curb ramp out and I got a wiff of hot/burnt/not good smell from under the bed....I am thinking tranny....gotta love the 4spd.

Last Monday I had the truck into the dealership for an oil change and 30,000 mile service. This included a tranny flush. So this is the first pull after the tranny flush. I have not noticed any smell before the flush.

Any ideas?????

Do I need a bigger truck?

The tranny guage shows right at 200 degrees if I am towing or not if this makes a difference.

Thanks in advance folks.

Since you never had the smell pulling before the service and your trans temp stayed in check I would suspect that some fluid was spilled and it's being burned off the exhaust or a leak formed during the service causing the same thing. I would look under the truck for that first. Did you double check the trans dipstick? Overfilling will cause some to spill out of the vent when it gets really heated.

I agree with Vernon....sounds like a spill problem.

Is the trans slipping? I have the same combo and tow 10,000 all the time..no issues other than I wish I had teh 8.1 for power.

I'd bet they overfilled the tranny and it puked some out. Not unusual.

ALWAYS recheck fluids after someone has touched them. ALWAYS.

It the smell was under the bed it could have been the rear diff. Check the fluid level. has it ever been changed? If not I would put that on the list of maintenance items. i tow a 9000 lb RV and I flush the tranny every spring and change the rear axle fluid every other spring.

I got the truck back from the dealer today and suprise, suprise, nothing wrong.

They test drove it and said the tranny only got to 150 degrees and 200 is normal for towing. I told them it reaches 200 and just driving around and was told not to worry until it reaches 250.

Has anyone added a bigger or second trans cooler to their truck?

As for the rearend, I thought it had synthetic fluid and did not need changed? Can I even change it? I have not looked for a plug.
